Baby gear for visiting family in Bengaluru: rent it, don't carry it
In short
When family visits with a baby, rent a compact stroller, a car seat that suits the child's weight, a travel cot and a high chair for the length of the stay. Check the car seat's manufacture date and harness, the stroller's brakes and the cot mattress fit before you take them home.
What to rent for a two- to six-week visit
- Stroller: a compact one that folds with one hand for autos and cabs. Bengaluru footpaths are uneven, so bigger wheels and a lockable front wheel help.
- Car seat: rear-facing for a baby up to about 13 kg (Group 0+); a forward-facing seat for a toddler. If it is ISOFIX, check the car has ISOFIX points.
- Travel cot or playpen, so the baby sleeps safely in a guest room.
- High chair, with a five-point harness for a toddler.
- A carrier for Lalbagh, Cubbon Park and anywhere a stroller will not go.
Book the whole stay
The rental runs from handover until the owner has it back. Some listings also show a weekly or monthly price, so check it before you book the whole visit.
Safety checks that matter
A car seat is the one item to be strict about. Read the manufacture date on the sticker underneath: most seats are meant to be replaced six to ten years after they were made. Ask the owner whether it has ever been in a crash; a seat that has should not be used. The harness should not be frayed and the buckle should click shut firmly.
In a travel cot the mattress should fit with no gap wider than two fingers at the sides. On a stroller, push it with the brake on: it should not roll.
Cleanliness
Ask the owner whether the fabric covers were washed after the last rental, and wipe down trays and handles yourself. Photograph each item at handover in the app, as you would anything else you rent.
Handover checklist

- Stroller: folds and locks open, brakes hold, canopy clips in
